Importance of a ‘Xorai’ in Assamese tradition

A ‘Xorai’ is an important part of Assamese culture and tradition. It holds a very specific space during any ritual, offerings and even greeting someone with immense respect.

Originally a Xorai is curated out of bell metal with or without cover lids. Some cover lids are designed with perforation and usually, these are used to place a lighted earthen lamp within it. And there are others made out of wood preferably from Gamari wood/white teak in different sizes. They are varnished or coloured with beautifully painted artworks.

Even during offerings made to Gods or exchanging gifts in a wedding in between the families of bride and bridegroom, a Xorai is considered to be an utmost important offering plate to accomplish such ritualistic and traditional tasks.
